Your Choice Of Clothing Can Be Eco Friendly
February 9th, 2012Over recent years, a growing number of people are becoming ‘green’ and are searching for eco friendly ways to do numerous things. Instead of driving gasoline cars, people are opting to drive hybrids; instead of using electricity produced via fossil fuels, people are choosing to use solar power and wind energy; and in the home, people are using earth friendly gadgets. Considering all of this, it’s not surprising that people are now adopting environmentally friendly clothes as well. Global warming fears will see a rise in environmenntally friendly items as people’s consciousness of the issues grow.
As to clothing, there’s a great deal of confusion with what’s regarded as environmentally friendly and what’s not. The rest of this article will now be about three materials commonly used in our clothes. If you are interested to determine if clothing is earth friendly, this should make it clearer.
Hemp:
One fabric believed to be earth friendly but one that people may be less aware of is hemp. Common clothing like trousers and coats may be made from hemp which as a crop comes from the ground. In a shop, look at labels in clothes to ascertain that hemp is used or a sales person can be asked about the organic nature of the material. Making certain that it is environmentally friendly can be hampered by the fact that manufacturing hemp is low-cost. You only need to check ahead of time that it is OK.
Cotton
Since it is lightweight and nice to wear, cotton wool is an usual material in clothing. Owing to the way it is created, cotton is frequently not very eco friendly. It is not eco friendly that fertilizers and plenty of water are required to grow cotton. Pesticides, which are also not environmentally friendly, can form a part of the cultivation process. The farming itself is not normally sustainable and usually cotton is not fair trade. This doesn’t mean to say that you can’t get cotton produced in an eco friendly fashion, you have to only ask if the cultivation of the cotton meets fair trade or organic production criteria. If you ask, you should be able to gauge if a retail outlet does supply goods and particularly cotton that is earth friendly.
As used in many fine clothing, wool is known for giving a feeling of comfort. The material will be seen in numerous clothing such as cardigans and coats. There are things you still have to check, although we may assume wool is environmentally friendly due to the fact that it is sourced from an animal. For wool to be viewed organic, you need to know that the sheep were supplied organic foodstuffs. A more critical factor is how the sheep are treated and raised. Free range sheep farming is to be encouraged even if we have to pay more for our wool. This needs to be watched with great care as oftentimes sheep are not grown like this.
You will see a growth in environmentally friendly goods because there is more public awareness of the advantages of going green.
